Cupcake Birthday

At first, I tried to hide them. Then, I tried to make them at the last minute, hoping they wouldn’t be found. I even tried to bake them in one of the ovens at my mom’s tea shop.

As a final act of desperation, I tried to split them up—hoping that the one I was planning to give Blue wouldn’t be found first.

I’m talking about cupcakes, and I had a cupcake problem on my hands. Baking things wasn’t my forte, though I did try my hand at cupcakes every time a special occasion occurred.

My creations were lopsided more often than not, and the frosting never seemed to look as good as on those picture perfect confections I found on the cloudy web, but Blueberry always seemed to appreciate them.

My real problem, however, was that my little creatures always seemed to find the cupcakes before I had a chance to give them to their intended recipients. I never caught them in the act. I didn’t need to, the piles of crumbs and empty cupcake liners were dead giveaways to their sticky-fingered theft.

I asked Blueberry’s sister, Bluesy, if she were plagued by crumby, sweet-stealing thieves. She said no, though I could tell that there was more to the story than she was willing to tell. Perhaps, the little creatures only liked half-baked desserts. Perhaps, she had simply found a way to keep the sugar-addicted creatures from stealing her always scrumptious stuff.

Eventually, I decided a bit of intervention was in order. Instead, of demanding that the little creatures stop stealing my stuff outright, I left a note suggesting that that for every cupcake they stole, they should give a cupcake to someone they didn’t know.

Looking back, I’m not sure if this was an act of kindness or not.

Maybe next time, I’ll ask Bluesy to donate to the cause.
