FALLtastic Birthday

Autumn is almost here!

Autumn is my favorite time of year—except for when I was still in school, which made fall a bit like a sour ball. Sure, it was the sweet time of the year, but school gave it a tart punch.

That being said, besides being gorgeous weather-wise and sucky school wise, autumn is the time of year that I always get a bit of a wanderlust sneaking up on me.*

Perhaps this is because, more often than not, the Wanderlores’ New Year falls in September. On the first day of this week-long event, I make my annual pilgrimage to the nearest creek in the Wanderlore Grove where I toss bread crumbs into the swiftly flowing water at my feet.  These bread crumbs represent the tears, disappointments and bad events that had visited me the previous year—the memories, of which, I don’t wish to keep.

After my annual tossing of memories, I’m ready to look to the year ahead. This is where the wanderlust comes in. Many times I feel a need to change my surroundings and rituals as I gear up for the coming year.

I’m saying this in the birthday post for September because maybe you, like me, have reached a milestone birthday where you feel that you need to move on in some fashion. It might be a relationship, a job or just an adventure that you’ve always wanted to take.

On this birthday, I give you permission to toss away regrets from previous years (symbolically, if you wish) and look forward to changing things that you haven’t been bold enough to tackle before.

So, when your special day comes, make a wish as you blow out the candles, then make a plan for the coming year. You’ll be glad you did.

Have a Happy FALLtastic Birthday!

*Of course, I always get a bit of spring wanderlust too, but that’s another story for another season.
